Cannabis tourism — traveling specifically to consume cannabis in a legal environment — has grown into a significant industry. As more states and countries legalize, the options for cannabis tourists have expanded dramatically. Here's the current landscape.
United States: Consumption Lounges
Most US states prohibit public cannabis consumption, but a growing number permit consumption lounges — licensed venues where adults can consume on-site. Nevada was the first state to permit consumption lounges, with Las Vegas now home to dozens of licensed venues. Colorado permits consumption in some licensed venues in Denver. New York, California, and Illinois are developing consumption lounge regulations.
Amsterdam: Still the Gold Standard
Amsterdam's coffee shop system remains the most established cannabis tourism infrastructure in the world. However, the Netherlands is in the process of implementing a regulated supply chain (the "gedoogbeleid" experiment), which may change how coffee shops operate. Tourists can still purchase and consume cannabis in licensed coffee shops.
Canada: The Most Visitor-Friendly
Canada's federal legalization makes it the most straightforward destination for cannabis tourists. Adults 18+ (19+ in most provinces) can purchase from licensed retailers and consume in designated areas. Many provinces permit consumption in private residences and some outdoor spaces.
Germany: Social Clubs Only
Germany's legalization does not include a commercial retail market yet, so tourists cannot easily access legal cannabis. The social club system requires membership and is not designed for visitors.
